How often should a piano be tuned?
For proper care and maintenance of your piano, you'll want to tune it every 6 months to 1 year, depending on a number of factors including:
Quality and condition of the piano
Changes in temperature/humidity
Frequency and intensity of use
Moving the piano
Room Placement (inside wall is best)
Tuning a piano keeps the proper amount of tension on the strings, and balances the forces in the overall mechanical system of the instrument. This keeps the wood stressed at the optimal level according to manufacturer specifications.
Basically...a piano starts to go out of tune the minute the piano tuner leaves your house, that's just the nature of stringed instruments. A family with kids taking lessons will have a different standard than a recording studio that tunes the piano before each session. After about 2 years the piano will typically have gone flat enough where a pitch raise is necessary (unless you have a new or very well maintained piano). It is ultimately up to you and how much your ear can stand.
How long should a piano sit after a move before it is serviced?
Your piano should sit for 2 weeks before having your piano tuned. This allows the wood to adjust to the new temperature and humidity settings. I know it's hard to wait sometimes...but it's worth it!
Do I play piano?
Yes I do! I am classically trained on piano and violin, and I play the guitar as well. I can read sheet music and play by ear. You can check out videos of me playing on my Facebook page HERE
Do I tune by ear?
I actually use a hybrid method. I was trained by ear and spent my first several years tuning by ear, but then my engineering mind wondered what the actual frequency of the pitches were, you know, data! You will see me using a tuner when tuning your piano, as I find a visual tuner helps speed the process of tuning, but the final decision of where to place each note is always done by ear.
Where is a good place to find a used piano?
You can always find pianos for sale on OfferUp, CraigsList, and Facebook Marketplace. Often people are moving and in need to sell a piano quickly, so you can find some great deals if the timing is right. There are also some great piano galleries throughout the phoenix area. Check out Stillwell Pianos or AZ Piano.
